The problem

Cirrhosis is known to have a high prevalence and mortality worldwide, especially for those decompensated cirrhosis with portal hypertension. A certain amount of patients deteriorate with known or unknown precipitants, and develop acute-on-chronic liver failure, which has a high short-term mortality.

Main discoveries and innovations

  • Targeted decrease of portal hepatic pressure gradient to improve ascites control after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS)
  • Risk stratification of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients treated with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART)
  • Two-dimensional shear wave elastography as a predictor of survival in advanced chronic liver disease
